Day 27 - Fairbanks, AK

Happy Fourth of July.  Today is a day for celebrating  and that is what we did.  It was a free day to do what we as individuals wanted to do and we did a variety of things.

Some people like Chris and Mary Pattison, Carl and Chris Findley, Gene and Marge Arnott, Mel and Dot Bolton, Ron and Cindy Robinett, Art and Jill Spierre and Bruce & Roni Wilczynski took a 16-21 hour drive/fly trip to the Arctic Circle and/ or to Cold Foot.  Mary said she saw two moose out of the airplane but they looked like mosquitoes.  Chris said there were a lot of mosquitoes at the Arctic Circle so they did not stay outside very long.  Roni said the wind was blowing very hard while they were there so they missed the mosquitoes.  They all said it was a very long day.

Dave and Lynn Coleman were the lucky winners of an overnight stay at Chena Hot Springs Resort and  had a wonderful time.  They liked the hot springs at Chena better than they did the ones at Laird because the bottom of these hot springs was much sandier.  The breakfast and dinner were both delicious.  On the grounds was a very nice ice museum which included ice walls, ice stools, ice bar and martinis in an ice martini glass.  I asked “weren’t you cold?” “No,” they replied, they were given parkas to wear.

Dick and Diane Hall went back into Fairbanks to see Mile Post 1522.  While there, they went to the log house that was close to the Ice Museum.  There they met Jodi Bailey, Yukon Quest and Iditarod musher, and two of her dogs.  For a donation, Dick was given a pair of doggie boots.  He said they smelled like dogs.

Those that stayed close to home like Robert and Bet Delcuze, Gilbert and Jenna Hall, did such things as going to The Bowl Company to get a free bowl which was described as a planter. Winifred and George Meiser participated in the activities at Pioneer Park such as listening to the Army Band and watching the Children’s parade.  Mary Jo Hurdle and Janice Crosson went out to visit Santa Claus at the North Pole. ( I bet they tried to tell Santa that they were good girls but we know better. Mary Jo left JW working on the DVR and Janice left poor Leslie home not feeling well.)  Lee and Pug Cook had breakfast with a friend who was not part of our caravan and then tried to visit the Musk Ox Farm but it was closed so they did their laundry instead.  Don and Jacque Smith went back to the Boat Discovery gift shop to buy some canned salmon.  They said that very few people were there which made shopping easy.  Bert and Carol Henderson and Ken Carpenter and Karla Rader also went to Santa’s House at the North Pole .  While they were there they watched a parade and then Ken and Karla were interviewed by a local newspaper.

Ron and Jackie Turshinsky played golf in their rubber boots at the most northern golf course in the United States.  They said they didn’t keep score but had lots of fun.

Ken and Carole Adams had a very relaxing day by staying close to home.  Of course we all had lots of questions for them.  So just how relaxing was it?  We are still missing Madi and Spence Schaaf who are stuck in Tok waiting for engine work to be done on their rig.

A potluck was held by those who did not go on long trips but stayed close to home.  Steak, chicken and pork chops were provided by Dick and Bev Enderlein and everyone else brought either a salad or a dessert.  Dick Enderlein, Don Smith and Gilbert Hall did the cooking and they did a wonderful job.  An hour before the guys were to start cooking, we had a down pour that lasted about 45 minutes and then we had about a 5 minute shower as they started cooking so they moved under Don and Jacque Smith’s awning but then it cleared up and we had a wonderful time.  As I am writing this at 10 PM, the sun is shining brightly.
