Day 8 - Columbia Icefields, AB to Valemount, BC

Day 8, June 15, 2011 Valemount, BC
By:  Dick and Beverly Enderlein Rig #9

We woke this morning to the sounds of generators and furnaces.  It was no wonder because we spent the night in the parking lot of the Columbia Ice Fields with the winds blowing right off the ice and under the motor homes.  The temperature inside the motor home was a cool 42 degrees.

On our way to Valemount, many of us stopped at the beautiful Sunwapta Falls.  As we got out of our coach, we were surrounded by a group of people all looking at our coach.  One brave sole approached us and asked if he could see the inside of the coach.  As it turned out, Bruce and Roni Wilczynski and us held open house for about 50 very polite and curious visitors from Israel.  They had so many questions that it took us about 20 minutes to answer them all.  They could not believe that only two of us  lived in one motor home.

As we were following the Athabasca River, we suddenly realized that it was flowing north into the Artic Ocean.  It seemed strange to us.  Most of the rivers we have seen flow south, east or west.

Today seemed to be the day for seeing Falls.  The second falls we stopped at  were the Athabasca Falls.  These falls were even more beautiful and fuller than the Sunwapta Falls.  We ran into several of our fellow travelers here and everyone seemed to enjoy the walk.  There were many gorges where the river had changed its course many times through the ages.

Lunch was had by several travelers in the quaint town of Jasper.  One thing we found unique was the town had built a very nice tunnel for pedestrians and bikers to cross under the railroad tracks.

We saw several wild animals on our drive this morning.  First we saw three Big Horned Sheep, then we saw three elk, next was a single black bear crossing the road ahead of us and lastly we saw a black bear with her cub.

Finally, we made it to iRVin’s Campground in Valemount, BC.  With all the activities we have been doing all week, we are really going to appreciate that extra hour we gained when we crossed into British Columbia.

After our daily travel briefing, we were treated to a delicious dinner of bar-b-qued beef, baked beans, coleslaw and for dessert angel food cake with strawberries and whipped cream.  Thank you Ken, Carol, Madi and Spence
