Chris and Mary |

The day started off with all of us ready for the off at about 7:30 AM (a good two hours earlier than Ken was due to leave!); so there was time to sample the breakfast at Chicken Gold Camp, take one last tour of ‘downtown’ Chicken and for those who missed the dredge tour yesterday, a second tour was put on at 9:00 AM. And so we set off…….

‘Turn Left!’, ‘Are you sure? That way looks like a path towards a farmer’s field!’ It was the right way and we picked our way through bumps and ripples (only for two miles) and then it was on to more normal secondary Alaska roads ……. mostly asphalt and frost heaves to keep you alert!
Along the highway there was evidence of what must have been a very large forest fire some years ago and the realization of the fragility of the eco system as it takes many years for the trees to recover.
Tok. The highlight of the day was the RV wash at the RV Park! Rigs entered shades of brown and with the help of much manual labour, came out a short time later much closer to their original colours; even the short rain shower did not dampen spirits.
Some had time to explore Tok and found interesting items (see photo). ‘I’ve found the Alaska pipeline!’ said one, ‘But I thought it was longer?’ was the reply, ‘the rest must be buried!’ came the response from the widely travelled RVer.

Afterwards we all went to the local restaurant for a LEO (Lets eat out!) and celebrated Jacques birthday. The RV Park had entertainment organized in the form of a local family ……. it is amazing the talent that is hidden in these far away places. Some time later a number of the men gathered to help and lend some moral support to change Chris’s 5th wheel leaf spring (‘Not again, I thought we did that last night!’ this time it was with the correct size leaf). ‘This is better than watching TV’ said one, ‘Naw, it’s like watching reruns where you know what’s goina ‘appen!’ was the response.

And so we put away all the tools and retired for the evening, a tired and happy bunch of Adventure Caravaners.
